Short Biography

Constance Smith joined the Department of Economics in 1986.  She holds an Honours BA from McGill University and an MA and PhD from Queen’s University in Kingston.  Previous appointments include Economist in the Research Department of the Bank of Canada, visitor at the  School of Economics at the Australian National University, and visiting fellow at the Research School of Social Sciences in Ottawa.  She has served as the Associate Chair in the Department of Economics, and in 2006-07 she was Acting Director of the Institute for United States Policy Studies at the University of Alberta.  She has published in the areas of international economics and macroeconomics.  Recent research, funded by SSHRC’s Initiative on the New Economy program, examines the impact of the exchange rate on imports, productivity, and investment.
